Five-ELEMENT Acupuncture
The ancient lineage of Five-Element Acupuncture is a unique and highly efficient system of medicine that originated in China several thousands of years ago, spreading throughout the Far East before arriving in the West. The essential and central principles of the practice are to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of dis-ease within a patient rather than the symptoms. Within Five-Element Acupuncture, the core belief is that many of the physical symptoms suffered by people arise from emotional and spiritual issues.
When we are in balance, the body, mind and spirit function happily together and we exist with ease. Our bodies feel good, our energy flows and our minds are clear and calm. However in our current social climate and society we are constantly pushed and pulled and easily knocked out of balance due to external factors, which can cause unhappiness, stress, and emotional discomfort leading to dis-ease.
Acupuncture has become an increasingly popular form of therapy in the Western Culture, as well as being widely accepted by the Western medical profession.
It is a safe and effective way of treating the ‘whole’ of a person, and seeks to rebalance the patient with their natural state of harmony and equilibrium, so that they are in health, feel truly peaceful, and can live life as nature intended. Taoism
Five-Element Acupuncture originates from Taoism, which expresses that all things are manifestations of the Tao (The Way). To follow the Tao is to walk the path with awareness of natures ever-changing forces and phases and to see the eternal spirit within all living things. Everything that is created and given life ultimately flows back into the Tao at it’s death.
To spring forth from the Tao, life must divide into two opposite yet complementary forces called Yin and Yang, this duality creates all within the universe. Yin and Yang are eternally present and are combined and complement each other while representing the nature of all life. When Yin and Yang are in balance there can be no disease.
The Taoist's awareness of nature throughout the ages was intrinsic to the development of Five-Element Acupuncture. Their continuous examination and connection to nature emphasised that we are also a part of nature, therefore follow natural law. The human body seen as a microcosm of the macrocosm (the Universe) has its own landscape and energetic patterns, which are connected by energy pathways called Meridians, similar to that of our planets deep river systems and channels. Life Energy (Qi) is the life force that produces and preserves the living world. This Qi energy follows these specific pathways throughout the human body. When we are in balance we flow naturally, unhindered and uninterrupted. When we slip out of balance our energy or life force becomes blocked or stagnated and our body, mind and spirit systems become unstable and distressed.
The Five Elements
The Five Elements signify the cyclical transformation of all life from birth, growth, degeneration, death and rebirth. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water symbolise the process of change and development in all living things, from the seasons to our bodies.
Treatment
As every person is unique, during the first consultation the patient’s individuality will be addressed, discussing personal information such as lifestyle, sleep patterns, diet etc... They will be asked for medical history and their reasons for seeking Acupuncture, which could be anything from physical symptoms to simply keeping ahead of the game and remaining healthy. Many people have Acupuncture simply to feel more in touch with their spirit and to give them a sense of health and wellbeing. It is a successful and efficient way of restoring balance. Very thin needles are inserted into Acupuncture points in specific areas of the body to connect to the energy points on the Meridians.
Treatment planning will depend on each individual. The first treatment and diagnosis will last up to 1hr30mins and following treatments will last up to an 1 hour. Depending on the individual it is advisable to come every week for the first four weeks then treatments can progress to between every fortnight or a month, however even one treatment can cause profound change and have an incredible effect.
Some people like to come for treatment every month as a way of keeping healthy and other people experience a profound change that can last for life after one session. The patient chooses what suits their lifestyle.
